Frugal Tip: Fire your Assistant
![]() |
Okay, I’m not advocating putting yet another person on the unemployement line. But if you don’t already have an assistant, you can get by using some really cool Web 2.0 applications that can help you create the illusion of having a real live assistant. The applications below, will email or text you a rundown of your daily agenda, update your calendar of choice, and offer a host of other features absolutely free. One will address you in the email as your assistant, and will even send an appointment confirmation to a second party. Check out the descriptions below:
I Want Sandy: An assistant program that works by using your emailing system. You email "Sandy" a request to remind you of something, and depending on your wording, she’ll create a task, or a meeting on your calendar. She’ll set a reminder and email or text you at the time you requested beforehand. For instance, your email might read: Remind me to take the garbage out Thursday at 7pm. Sandy will send you a confirmation that she set a calendar appointment at 7pm on Thursday for you to take the garbage out. And sure enough, on Thursday, you will get an email and/or text message 15 minutes before (or other specified time) your scheduled task. She’ll even send you a "Daily Digest," or agenda first thing in the morning. I especially love the feature, that allows you to cc: others. She will send them a reminder with a calendar attachment, allowing them to import the event into their own calendars. Other features include: re-occurring appointments, tagging, bookmarking, contacts, RSS, and Google/Outlook/Mozilla calendar integration. I’ve been using it for a week, and I absolutely love it. reQall: An all inclusive calendaring/task/list system that allows you to use your phone, email, instant messaging, and text to create events, tasks, and shopping lists. The website calls it a memory tool, but it looks more like a life tool. I can imagine never forgetting to do a single thing on your to-do list, simply because there are so many options available to capture your thoughts. You can even create contacts within the system, and forward your lists to them via voice, text, email, etc. Other features include RSS and integration with other Calendar systems. What’s nice about reQall are the other tools freely available like: applications for your computer, iPhone, Firefox, and Windows Mobile. The phone apps allow you to record your voice directly from your phone. I hope they come out with the Palm version soon.
